After reading the first few chapters, I was so intrigued by the story that I went ahead and read the original version in Chinese. Before I continue, you should understand that even though I can read and understand Chinese, I rarely read manhwa in Chinese. I always prefer reading English materials, even if the translation isn't that good. The fact that I would even do so should indicate how good the story is. Now, you might start to wonder why I only gave 7 points for the story even though I am praising it. You'll understand why once you read further.
So, I went ahead and read the Chinese version all the way to the latest chapter, which was chapter 140. At that point, Tang San had already reached 20 years old.. Without including his previous life, it means that the manhwa has already covered 14 years of his life. When I first reached the latest chapter of the manhwa, I gave it an incredible score of 9. I would have given it a 10 but there were some flaws within the story. There were numerous points in the manhwa that simply glossed over what happened and left me confused, but even with these flaws, it was still incredible. So, why did I change my score?
I changed it because I went and read the novel.
I couldn't wait for the latest chapter to arrive, so I went ahead and read the novel. I needed to know what happened next and I was rewarded for it. The novel went through every single detail that the manhwa failed to deliver. It revealed many more details that didn't appear in the manhwa and explained the actions of the characters. The many plot holes that were in the manhwa were not in the novel. The manhwa tried to change the storyline in some parts and resulted in disastrous plot holes that appeared in future chapters. There were also quite a divergence in the mentality of the characters, especially the main character.
In the end, it was an interesting experience but failed to deliver in some parts. However, I would definitely recommended reading the novel.

*SPOILER WARNING*
This is an amazing Manga and I loved it so when I couldn't wait I decided to start reading the LN. The LN stated much better details and it wasn't made for young 13 year olds so it made more sense. Like when that scorpion interpreted Grandmaster and Erlong in the LN they were about to have sex which explained why Erlong was so pissed but in the Manga I was lost because all they did was sit next to each other. It made no sense that Erlong would be pissed cuz that was going nowhere anyway
Another point is the chapter where Tang San confessed to Xiao Wunand that whole spring love thing. There was nothing wrong with that even if they changed small details like the classroom setting but what pissed me off is that it skipped to the grandpa coming when Tang Beat Tai long. In the LN Tang beat Tai long then the dad came and Tang beat a rank 50 and then the grandpa came and all that stuff happened. In the LN it showcased Tang San badass by showing him beat a rank 50 and there was a little joke about how the father would come if the son lost, but in the manga it just skipped to the grandpa and left out everything else
Like I said the Manga is amazing, funny, and cool but after reading the LN I suggest that everyone who reads the manga read the LN because the Manga is rushed and changes as well as leaves out detail plus the LN is the original version. Think of it like this the book is always more detailed you just have to imagine all scenes and the movie is always rushed in comparison but gives you the scenes so u don't have to imagine it. Read bothe the LN and the Manga and you fall in love with this series
*(I apologize for any errors in spelling I am doing this from my iPad and the onscreen keyboard and auto correct is killing me)

What started as a Chinese text was ported to the Korean manwha format and finally graced our screens in English, so why miss out?! Exactly, what started off as a peculiar reincarnation story, slowly transformed into a battle heavy sojourn that felt like one extended stream of leveling up and unraveling abilities.
In my personal opinion, it was quite enjoyable. A concoction of romance and action with hints of comedy, a deep rapport is quickly built between character dynamics as well as the readers. Initially, I was startled and, to be perfectly honest, intimidated by the amount of depth of the spirit chart that labelled the levels of the practitioners, however it quickly became clear that the reader is reacquainted with each person’s levels almost every chapter. To date there are no obvious omissions of time that present the story to be fractured, allowing for greater enjoyment and immersion.
The art is truly breathtaking and the innovation on an already saturated genre of manwha/manga brings with it a sense of exhilaration as the story relies on expedience and tension to launch the reader into a page-turning piece of fiction.
For an amazing story with great characters and even better art, look no further than..Douluo Dalu.

Well first off, I LOVE THIS MANGA!!! Some reasons why- the story is good. It's not super action themed or deep or dark and stuff so it feels like happy-ish. The art is awesome! It's isn't like normal manga so it takes a bit of getting used to to but it's good overall. Plus it COLORED, SO GREAT!! The charaters are all op. I LOVE that. Especially the main one. All the charaters are different from each other and are the basic generic but I really like that. It show some development I guess..AND SUPER DUPER EXTRA INPORTANT DETAIL IS THAT IT UPDATES DAILY!!! ONE OR MORE OMG.
*note if reading don't stop at the first chapter since it's basically just a prologue

Synopsis

Tang San is one of Tang Sect martial art clan's most prestigious disciples and peerless in the use of hidden weapons. With high expectations, the sect's elders believe his future will be bright; yet Tang chooses to forsake this life at the cost of obtaining the sect's forbidden lore—an action punishable by death. Tang, now content with his ascension of knowledge, sees no reason to keep on living and jumps from Hell's Peak, but little did he know that that would not be the end of his existence.
In Douluo Continent, the strong prevail and the weak perish. Each person possesses an innate spirit, some of which can be cultivated and strengthened, bestowing its user with various benefits. Those who were born with such spirits can become Spirit Masters, a profession regarded as one of the continent's most noble.
Tang, reincarnated into this strange world, knows only the life of a blacksmith's son. At the age of six, he takes part in the Spirit Master ceremony, and discovers his spirit is Blue Silver Grass—supposedly the world's most useless spirit. In contrast, however, he possesses strong spirit power. Now, aided by the memories of his previous life as well, Tang's future as a Spirit Master is in no way bleak.

I would say Soul Land is challenging to get into at first, since it looks pretty much like an xbox game, but honestly, the further you get into it the less and less you notice that aspect. It actually works very well for the show. Depending on the translator you watch, there may be some inconsistencies, so take care in being flexible with your reading of the subtitles.
Essentially the main character rises to prominence in his clan, but those among them did not trust his ascent and tried to extricate his position. He chose suicide to prove his loyalty, and is reincarnated in a parallel world where people gain power by collecting the souls of powerful creatures inhabiting special forests.
The fight scenes are epic, the music and sound works well with the anime, and the pacing seems steady, if not fast in some places, keeping the watcher from becoming bored. The main character is endearing and honest, but at the same time, flashes of his nature as a martial artist spark in his current life where he borders on cunning brutality.
It's worth taking the chance. If you haven't seen a good martial arts fantasy in a while, it is very much something that will satisfy you.

This anime is based on the Douluo Dalu novel.
It seems to be translated as 'Soul Land' here but the original translators called it 'Combat Continent.'
Doulou is the name of the continent, and according to Chinese dictionaries, 'dou lou' means 'to bring to light' to 'shake out' or 'to squander.' Dalu means 'continent.' So the name of the novel is literally 'Doulou Continent.' Making my amateur transliteration 'a continent which squanders and oppresses but also brings forth the light.' Chinese is pretty interesting for fitting all that in a title.
Point is, we know the story is excellent because it originates with Doulou Dalu. A few important parts from the novel are left out but overall it comes together nicely.
What really sets this anime above the rest are the combat scenes. The way combat is choreographed and animated in Doulou Dalu is the best I've ever seen. I've watched a lot of combat anime! None have managed to reach the level of Doulou Dalu except perhaps Gantz: O, which was a full-fledged movie.
Unfortunately, there are two major downsides. First is the animation. I know, I was just gushing about the animation, right? Sadly it suffers from a major flaw I've seen in several high-profile Chinese animations.
It stutters.
Yes, the animation, great as it is, stutters. For the entire series. Every episode. All the time. Clearly the rendering or encoding is suffering from a major defect but apparently nobody bothered to fix this problem. It's extremely jarring during some of the most important scenes of the anime. This is a dealbreaker.
The second problem with the anime is product placement. Earlier reviews wouldn't have seen this because it didn't start until episode 12. Between episode 12 and episode 15 product placement literally becomes part of the story. There's a minute and a half which are entirely devoted to a weird-looking floating tea leaf. Meanwhile, the main characters are buying or selling 'refreshing all-natural green tea.'
It's jarring, annoying, and frankly, it's sad that it's so blatant. Luckily, after three episodes the animation team wizened up and switched to a commercial format. Given that the episodes are already very short, adding commercials into the main story would've been the death knell for this series.
Overall this anime has a lot of promise which is overshadowed by some poor choices from the animation team. I personally hope these issues are remedied for the next installment because Doulou Dalu deserves better treatment from this studio. The studio's animators can clearly put out top-quality work if they put their mind to it.
