Ahead of Borderlands: The Handsome Collection's release next week, developer Gearbox Software has posted a detailed set of instructions for how to migrate your existing saves to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 game.

The Handsome Collection features remastered versions of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. If you've played either of those games on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 (or PlayStation Vita for Borderlands 2), you will be able to move your saves to The Handsome Collection.

The one major catch is that you can only transfer saves within the same console family. https://ninebooks.netlify.app/download-game-ps2-di-android.html. This means, Xbox 360 to Xbox One is supported, but not Xbox 360 to PS4.

A PC version of The Handsome Collection has not been announced.

To bring your save forward to The Handsome Collection, you'll first need to download a patch for Borderlands 2 or The Pre-Sequel that enables cross-save functionality. This update should arrive later in the week.

After you've downloaded the patch, you need to follow the steps listed below, spelled out by Gearbox. If you're running into trouble, Gearbox recommends visiting its support site.

  • Ensure all versions of the games are up to date with the latest patch (old-gen and new-gen) and you are connected to PlayStation Network or Xbox Live.
  • From the main menu of the PS3 or Xbox 360 versions of BL2 or BL:TPS, choose the “Cross Save” (PlayStation consoles) or “Cloud Save” (Xbox consoles), then “Upload Save” function.
  • Once the save has been uploaded, choose “Cross Save” or “Cloud Save” then “Download Save” from the main menu of the PS4 / Xbox One Handsome Collection game for which you’re downloading the save.

IMPORTANT: Only one save may be uploaded at a time. If you have multiple saves to transfer, upload one save, then download it in the Handsome Collection, then repeat the process for successive saves.

Please note:

  • The Xbox family of systems can only move saves from Xbox 360 to Xbox One and not the other way around.
  • The PlayStation family of systems can upload / download saves from any system to any other PlayStation system. Think of PS3 / PS4 / PSV as a triangle, and saves can move in any direction (Vita saves are only applicable to BL2 and not BL:TPS).
  • Uploading a save does not remove it from the original system, it only creates a copy of the save on the network.
  • Players will need the day 1 patch for the Handsome Collection in order to download saves.
  • Players will also need the most recent patch installed for PS3 / Xbox 360 in order to upload saves.

When you transfer your save, here’s what comes along with it:

  • Character level and all mission progress
  • Badass Points (all of these will transfer, but you’ll get to re-spend them)
  • Backpack inventory
  • Weapon slots
  • Cash and Eridum/Moonstones
  • All unlocked character customizations (heads/skins) ***note that customizations obtained from Telltale's Poker Night 2 will be added in a patch following launch***
  • Items stored in the bank in Sanctuary

Note that items stored in Claptrap's Secret Stash in Borderlands 2 will NOT transfer along with your save, so be sure to move anything you can't live without to the bank. Trophies and Achievements will also not transfer over and will need to be re-earned.

Your Golden Key balance will also not transfer. However, as a reward for playing Borderlands 2 and/or Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, all players will receive the following bonuses upon signing into SHiFT in The Handsome Collection for the first time:

Borderlands 2

  • 75 Golden Keys
  • A healthy chunk of Badass Rank
  • Bonus character customizations

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

  • 75 Golden Keys
  • A healthy chunk of Badass Rank
  • Bonus unique weapons and character customizations

Note: These bonus Badass points can only be earned once and are redeemed instantly upon entering the game. We recommend using the Cross/Cloud Save functionality prior to starting a game in The Handsome Collection to transfer over your account’s Badass Rank. This will ensure that bonus Rank is awarded in addition to existing Badass Rank.

The standard PlayStation 4 hard drive holds just 500GB, which is enough space for about a dozen modern games, at best. Upgrading the hard drive allows you to store more content and ensure your system runs at peak performance for years to come. Learn how to perform a PS4 hard drive upgrade without losing any games saved to your console.

What You Will Need

  • Your new PS4 hard drive
  • A Phillips head screwdriver
  • An external hard drive to back up your game data
  • A USB drive with at least 1GB of free storage

How to Upgrade a PS4 Hard Drive

Since Sony doesn’t manufacture hard drives specifically for the PS4, your first step is finding a compatible hard drive. The PS4 comes with a hard disc drive, but you can install a solid state drive if you prefer. SSDs typically run much faster, but they're sometimes less durable and they're also more expensive.

Your best bet is to purchase a hard drive from a company like Seagate, which manufactures hard drives optimized for the PS4. That said, any 2.5' laptop hard drive no more than 9.5mm thick should do; if you're making the effort to replace your PS4 hard drive, though, you might as well upgrade to at least 1 or 2TB.

Changing your console's hard drive doesn't void the warranty.

Most of the games you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be re-downloaded to your new hard drive at no cost, so you should delete them before backing up the rest of your files to make the backup process quicker. Some content, such as the 2014 P.T. demo, has been removed from the PS4 network, so make sure you don’t erase anything you can’t get back. PlayStation Plus subscribers can also upload their save data to the cloud for later retrieval.

Depending on how much data you have, you may be able to fit the backup file onto a thumb drive. Otherwise, plug your external hard drive into one of the PS4's USB ports, then do the following:

  1. From the PS4 home menu, choose the Settings option.

  2. Navigate to System > Backup and Restore > Back up PS4. After following the on-screen instructions, your console will restart, and backup will begin.

  3. Your PlayStation will restart once again when the process is complete, and a copy of your data should be saved to the external drive.

Download the Latest PS4 Software Update

Go to the PlayStation website and download the most recent software update for the PS4. Find the newest PS4 OS update, click “Download Update' and save the files to a portable USB drive.

This step is required for your new hard drive to function properly.

  1. Inside the PS4 folder, make another folder named UPDATE.

  2. Drag the PS4 OS update file, named PS4UPDATE.PUP, into the UPDATE folder. Be sure to safely eject the flash drive and set it aside for now.

Open Your PS4

Before you begin, turn off your PS4, unplug it and place it on a steady flat surface. If you have a newer PS4, look on the back of the console for a removable panel on one of the corners. You may see a sticker indicating the size of the hard drive.

This step will differ slightly depending on the model of your PS4. The pictures below are of the newer PlayStation 4 Slim. The PlayStation website has diagrams of each PS4 model you can refer to if you have an older system.

With the back of the console facing you, remove the panel by gently sliding it to the right with your fingers.

Java Plug-in; Java Web Start; Java Update; JavaDB (JavaDB is included only. To install, download jdk-6u29-windows-ia64.exe or jre-6u29-windows-ia64.exe. Flash plug in version 6.

For older PS4 models, you should see two panels on top of your PS4; one is glossy, the other is the same color as the rest of the console. With the PS4 facing you, remove the glossy panel by pressing on the edges and gently sliding it to the left. Underneath, you should see the hard drive.

Although the PlayStation 4 Pro can hold 1TB of data out of the box, you may still wish to swap the PS4 internal hard drive for something more powerful. If you have a PS4 Pro, turn the console flat on its back and look for the plastic tab beside the Ethernet port. Remove it with your fingers to reveal the hard drive.

The hard drive is secured to the console by a single screw bearing the symbols found on the PlayStation controller. Remove the screw with your Phillips head screwdriver, but don't lose it.

You should now be able to remove the hard drive by pulling on it. The actual hard drive casing is held together by two or four screws, which you should unscrew and set aside. Take out the old hard drive and insert the new one without touching the bottom of either drive to avoid damaging them. Make sure the metal pins are facing inward, and close the casing by re-securing the screws.

Put Everything Back Together

Place the encased hard drive back into the console and secure the decorated screw; slide the exterior cover back into place. Plug your system back in and reconnect it to your TV. Hold the console’s power button for a few seconds to restart your PS4.

How to Set Up Your New PS4 Hard Drive

When you turn on your PlayStation, it should start in Safe Mode. You'll be greeted with a message such as 'Cannot start the PS4,' which is what you want to see.

Install the PS4 Software Update

  1. Connect a PS4 controller to the console via the USB cable and press the PS button.

  2. Now, you will be asked to insert a device containing the PlayStation Software Update into the console's other USB port.

  3. Plug in your USB drive from earlier, and then select OK and Yes on the next screen.

  4. After the update finishes installing, the system will restart again.

You'll now follow the same steps you had to take when you originally purchased your PS4 such as setting the date and language preferences.

Restore Your Game Data

  1. Connect the external hard drive containing your backup data.

  2. From the home menu, go to Settings > System > Back up and Restore.

  3. Choose Restore PS4, select the backup file and follow the on-screen instructions.

  4. When your data is successfully restored, the system with restart one last time.

  5. When the PS4 home menu comes back up, it should look identical to how it did before the hard drive swap change. Your user profile, save data, and trophies will all be intact.
